5 Easy Ways to Fill Your Being

Self-care is exactly what the word says. It’s simply about caring for oneself. In today’s day and age, our lives are so busy, and we are expected to do so much in a short period of time, that often we don’t even consider taking a moment to ourselves. Who are we and how do we want to function? And, because we don’t take the time to think about that, eventually, we burn out. But, sometimes, we can recognize that, and take some time for ourselves. Other times, however, it may lead to more serious circumstances such as mental health illness and depression.

You probably have heard the ‘overflowing teacup’ analogy. In order to help others, we first need to fill our own cup. We need to be well ourselves, to have the strength and energy to give what’s overflowing to those around us. If we gave what is in our cup to others, our own supply of energy will be depleted much faster, and we won’t be able to help ourselves, let alone those we love. Personally, we like to think about self-care as nourishment of our body, mind, and soul. So here are some simple ideas you can do, to care for yourself, just a few minutes a day.

Pretend it’s your Birthday!
Imagine what it’s like at your Birthday party again and again and again! Look at your friends and family who love you. Imagine when they stand up and give little speeches about you and what you mean to them. Embrace that ideology- celebrate the wholeness of who you are and what effect and affect you have on others that really matters. What would you like them to say?

Practice Gratitude
Contentment is not a destination- it is ever evolving. First, identify a goal you’re working toward. Then ask yourself: What do I enjoy about it? Is it the learning? Meeting people? Helping people? And finally, think about parts of the journey that you can express gratitude for. This helps you focus on the joy and contentment of the here and now, rather than being so outcome oriented.

Weed Your Feed
Social media reinforces that inner voice telling you you’re not good enough or not doing enough. If certain people’s posts give you a knot in your stomach or make you feel inadequate, unfollow them (if it’s a stranger) or temporarily mute them (even if they’re a friend). Catch up in ways that feel more grounded, like having a phone conversation or a simple cup of coffee. It’s healthy to hit the pause button and silence distractions such as phones, etc.

Take Care of Number One
YOU! People are unaware that their physical sensations can lead to negative thought patterns. When you are low on sleep, movement, or hydration, that ticker tape of “ not good enough” is more likely to run through your head. Make sure you’re getting enough rest, sipping water regularly, and finding time for movement( EVERYDAY!)

Speak the Emotions
Hustle culture and perfectionism may result from looking to feel valued. Don’t get confused that as long as you get the promotion or collect the more followers on social media, you deserve your place in the world. Why, because you’re valuable no matter what, period. Try repeating “I am not a reflection of my productivity” or “I have value no matter what I get done today” as a daily reminder to yourself.

Get rid of old conversations that you are allowing to fester, and incidents that no longer have a place in your daily routine. Remember, we all carry ‘baggage’ whether heavy or lightweight. Assessing what is insignificant can help you unpack what really has no place any longer. In doing so, you will begin to process associations and experiences in a safe and healthy way.
